| | Anguilla has been extensively mined for sand. The removal of dune systems and development too close to the coast has caused the loss of a very important ecosystem. The dunes are used by nesting turtles and birds, provide defence against strong storms, and are habitat for coastal plants and animals. | | | | Anguilla National Trust has made valiant efforts to save the ever disappearing dunes. They have erected pallet fences that stop sand blown against them. This sand builds up and over time the pallets will be buried as a new dune is formed. | | | | |
