| FAO, with the support of a number of donors, established a Support Unit for International Fisheries and Aquatic Research in 1998, with the purpose of being responsive to research needs and to promote responsible fisheries practices. The results of a Study of International Fisheries Research Needs for Developing Countries, funded by a range of donors, was published in 1992 by the World Bank. It offers a comprehensive review of research needs in developing countries and suggests a plan of action to improve fisheries research in developing countries. The study also generated a number of World Bank Technical Papers, which largely focus on research needs in particular regions and on particular types of fisheries.Access to data and methodologies, and the availability of the results of past research are fundamental to building the research foundation for fisheries management. | | | A major initiative at developing a comprehensive bibliographic database is the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) established to collect and disseminate information covering the science, technology and management of marine and freshwater environments. ASFA contains more than 750,000 bibliographic references to the world's aquatic science literature since 1971 and over 650,000 of them (since 1978) are searchable electronically. ASFA is produced as a cooperative effort by the ASFA Partners consisting of United Nations Co-sponsoring Partners, national and international Partners and the publishing partner. The objective is to disseminate bibliographic information to the world community. | | | | Apart from its participation in ASFA, the FAO and its Fisheries Department has, since 1945 been responsible for a broad range of publications on fisheries. Since 1968 alone, the Fisheries Department has produced some 20,000 titles. The best known and widely distributed FAO fisheries publications are those within the regular series category, such as the Fisheries Technical Papers and the Fisheries Reports, the FAO Yearbooks of Fishery Statistics, Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries and the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture. FAO has an online catalogue to facilitate the distribution of bibliographic data on its publications. | | | | |
