Description
THE PUERTO RICO TRENCH, the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, is located where the North American tectonic plate is subducting (sinking) under the Caribbean tectonic plate. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has been conducting a series of studies to help understand the reasons for the large vertical movements of the Earth in this region and to provide information for earthquake and tsunami hazard assessment.
