Abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) -- more popularly known as marine debris -- is a problem of increasing concern. A new FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper, undertaken by the United Nations Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, reviews the magnitude and composition of ALDFG. Abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear, now available online, notes that while information is not comprehensive and does not allow for any global estimates, gillnets and fishing traps/pots may be the most common type of ALDFG. Factors leading to ALDFG as well as their impacts are presented. The paper profiles measures already considered to stem the problem and includes a number of recommendations for future action.
