More than 1500km south of Tasmania, halfway to Antarctica, hunters and scientists are reclaiming Macquarie Island from introduced pests such as rabbits, rats and mice. Their hard work reduced the number of rabbits on the 12,860ha island from about 150,000 to an estimated 30 or less. Unfortunately, 2000 seabirds were killed after taking the baits or scavenging carcasses of poisoned rabbits or birds.
