14 Nov 2016 -

The tsunami warning sparked by a massive 7.5-magnitude earthquake now extends from Dunedin to Hawkes Bay, including Cook Strait and the Chatham Islands coastal areas.

According to Civil Defence, waves of 1 to 2 metres can still be expected in the red zone. All other areas have been cleared, but people are warned to expect strong currents and to stay out of the water.

Locally, the impact on the Kaikoura (South Island) crayfish and whalewatching industry has not yet been assessed, nor the impact on the Port of Wellington (North Island). See image.
