This month, the UN Atlas looks at the North Atlantic Ocean, from the Gulf Stream to the Arctic. The Atlantic has wide continental margins supporting major fisheries and other marine industries. Large centers of population border the coastlines on either side, providing a challenge to coastal zone managers. Wastewater management is among one of the greater problems faced by coastal zone decision-makers - visit the Atlas section for updates on this topic.

- Coral Reef Activities : NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program. The NOS and its partners carry out numerous activities related to coral reefs. NOS's Office of Response and Restoration (ORR) coordinates collaborative planning, implementation, evaluation and reporting for NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program. ORR is creating spill response guides and environmental sensitivity index maps for coral ecosystems.

- Vaccine 'could save Chile's salmon industry millions' : A vaccine against bacteria that cause annual losses of US$150 million to Chile's farmed salmon industry will be commercially available for the first time next year.
- Southeast Fisheries Science Center : Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) conducts multi-disciplinary research programs to provide management information.
- South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) : Conserving and managing US fisheries
- Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC) : Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC) is responsible for management of fisheries in federal waters off the mid-Atlantic coast.
- Social Science for Marine Protected Areas : NOAA launched a new Web site on research techniques for examining the "human dimensions" of marine and coastal resource management. The site gives basic information about social science concepts and methods, and guides managers in determining the appropriate tools, such as surveys and cost-benefit analyses, to address their specific issues.

- Underwater Robot Crosses Gulf Stream : A small ocean glider named Spray is the first autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, to cross the Gulf Stream underwater, from near Massachusetts, USA to near Bermuda.
- Sustainable fishing in the Arafura &Timor Seas : Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing is increasing the number of endangered species in the Arafura and Timor Seas and is of major concern to bounding countries, and coastal and indigenous communities who depend upon the Arafura and Timor Seas for their livelihood.

- Alaska Fisheries Science Center databases : Databases on fishery, oceanography, marine mammal, and environmental research
- Sea Around Us : Assesses large-scale impacts of fishing on marine ecosystems globally.
