Introductory Bayesian Statistical Methods Workshop - December 2005 Maintained by NOAA
Text-only     Printer-friendly version
Workshop Outline

The primary goal of the workshop is to clarify the differences between Bayesian and traditional (frequentist) statistics. Each person can then make an informed decision about which type of analysis is most appropriate for answering his/her questions of interest. The emphasis of the workshop will be on concepts, not mechanics. The workshop will be a combination of lecture, question and answer discussion, and practical application with a computer. The morning will be devoted to presenting the basic ideas of Bayesian statistics, with marine mammal examples ranging from simple to complex. The ways in which Bayesian and frequentist methods differ in the treatment of estimation, uncertainty and inference will be emphasized. Hypothesis testing will be contrasted with Bayesian inference. The afternoon will be a hands-on tutorial using WinBUGS, a program for Bayesian analysis available over the internet. A link to the URL is provided below.
