The legal regime for energy from the sea, in fact for all uses of the sea, is built around the rights and duties of coastal States and those of other States that are specified in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It is important to note that such rights and duties vary according to where in the maritime space the activities relating to production of energy from the sea are carried out.

Twenty small island developing nations have announced new actions to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and end poverty, as they wrapped up a sustainable energy conference organized by the United Nations and the Government of Barbados.
