The legal regime for recreation and tourism in marine areas, in fact for all uses of the sea, is built around the rights and duties of coastal States and those of other States that are specified in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It is important to note that such rights and duties vary according to where in the maritime space the activities relating to recreation and tourism are carried out.
Marine recreation and tourism is a multi-faceted sector involving both land-based segments, such as hotel and beach industry, and marine segments, such as the cruise ship industry.
