Disposal of Waste from Land
Text-only     Printer-friendly version
From land, sea and air

Most marine pollution comes from land-based sources. It reaches the seas by air and rivers as well as directly from land. The global range and nature of the damage caused is often disguised by the local impacts. Litter, heavy metals, hydrocarbons and radionuclides are not believed by marine scientists to be global problems, though often having a high priority at local levels.

Sewage, eutrophication and sediment mobilization -- along with destruction of habitat -- are a major global concern among the UN experts.
