OBIS - Marine Biodiversity Database Maintained by IOC
Text-only     Printer-friendly version
OBIS allows users to search marine species datasets from all of the world's oceans

OBIS logoOcean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS), now part of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), a UN-Oceans agency, has expanded to provide identification and location information on more than 118,000 marine species from 887 databases. OBIS now has 30 million records from an expanding network of regional nodes around the globe. OBIS is a globally integrated, geo-referenced quantitative information system. Adding new data, standardizing them in a database, and opening them to computer search multiplies the knowledge that can enlighten people and guide management decisions.

OBIS was formerly part of the Census of Marine Life (CoML), which ended a 10 year census of the world’s oceans in 2010. During the General Assembly of the IOC in June 2009, OBIS was formally adopted as an activity of its International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) programme. OBIS will remain operating as a distributed network, but management will be under the aegis of IOC. More details on this are available on the IODE site.

To begin creating your own data tables, maps and predict distribution using environmental information, please visit the OBIS Portal.   See More...
