Towards the use of GIS as a Decision Support Tool for the Management of Mediterranean Fisheries

Background

The FAO COPEMED Project GCP/REM/057/SPA, within the framework of its activities aiming at the enhancement of scientific knowledge for a better management of Mediterranean Fisheries has led a regional training activity on the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) through a scientific cooperation approach.

COPEMED was the subject of a workshop (IEO Centre of Fuengirola, Malaga, Spain in December 1998) whose objective was to bring about collaboration initiatives between experts in GIS and scientists in the region willing to receive training in the use of this tool. These collaboration initiatives were expected to eventually lead to project proposals concerned with the development of GIS applications as training support.
