Description

As a marine ecologist I have worked on coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef and other regions around the world since 1988. My main research interests are to better understand roles and consequences of disturbances by terrestrial run-off and climate change, and factors affecting the biodiversity of near-shore coral reefs. I was awarded a PhD by the University of Munich in 1995, and presently hold the position of a Principal Research Scientist. I am leading a research group investigating the effects of terrestrial runoff on the condition of inshore reefs, and developing indicators to assess changes in inshore coral reefs attributable to changing water quality. To date, I have published more than 80 articles in international journals / book chapters, and written a book on Indo-Pacific soft corals and sea fans. MAIN RESEARCH INTERESTS Coral reef biodiversity and conservation: Community regulatory processes in macrobenthos; links between the physical environment and species abundances; impacts by natural disturbances and anthropogenic activities; biodiversity and resilience. Water quality: Relationships between water quality and ecosystem function in coastal systems, especially coral reefs; effects of pollution, sedimentation, turbidity; ecological indicators. Octocorals: Ecology, feeding biology, ecological indicators, taxonomic inventories.
