Oceans and Climate Change
Assesses the effect of global climate change on oceanographic processes important to fish population dynamics and the environment.

GLOBal ECosystem Dynamics (GLOBEC) NorthEast Pacific (NEP)

The Global Ecosystems Dynamics is a research program organized by oceanographers and fisheries scientists to address the question of how global climate change may affect the abundance and production of animals in the sea. The NorthEast Pacific project has a homepage at http://globec.oce.orst.edu

The project Patterns, Sources and Mechanisms of Decadal-Scale Variability in the Northeast Pacific seeks to improve our understanding of the links between environmental and biological variability on interannual to decadal time scales. This research is funded by the National Science Foundation and the NOAA Coastal Ocean Program as a project of the US GLOBEC NEP Program. Go to http://www.pfeg.noaa.gov/research/globec/index.html

Comparative Ecosystems
The comparative fisheries oceanography research utilizes oceanographic and meteorological information, supplied by the U.S. Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center to describe interactions between the environment and the biology of the small pelagic fishes which comprise one third of the world's marine fish catch (sardines, anchovies, mackerel and other small pelagic fishes). This research, which started on populations in the California Current, has expanded to include analyses of populations in the Peru, Benguela, Agulhas, Canary, Kuroshio, and Brazil Currents. Stellar Sea Lion
This project studies the relationship between Steller sea lion ecology and climate variability in the North Pacific and Bering Sea as part of a national program. For more information on the sea lion decline, go to the National Marine Mammal Laboratory at http://nmml.afsc.noaa.gov/AlaskaEcosystems/sslhome/stellerhome.html

NASA
A three-year (2003-2005) project funded through NASA to study bio-physical coupling in the Atlantic. This project will determine the relationship between thermocline depth, sea surface height, nutrient availability, and phytoplankton blooms, and their annual to interannual scale variability, using a combination of satelite data and modeling techniques.

North Pacific Marine Science Organisation (PICES)
A number of PFEL researchers actively participate in PICES activities. More information at http://pices.ios.bc.ca/

CoastWatch
CoastWatch is a program of the National Environmental, Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS) Office of Research Applications.

The West Coast Regional Node has just been relocated to Pacific Grove, California. Go to http://coastwatch.pfeg.noaa.gov CoastWatch delivers ocean environmental data, useful and usable for managers and researchers, from products derived by satellite in near real-time.
