Although the deep ocean is thought to be mainly unpolluted (it is, however, not fully explored and still largely unknown), coastal waters and coastal lagoons in some regions are highly endangered and suffer from severe levels of degradation.
Pollution of the ocean environment can be either land-based or sea-based. However, most marine pollution is from land-based sources: domestic and industrial effluent, drainage from agriculture run-off in urban areas, solid waste disposal, airborne-sources of pollution, and sediments from erosion or land reclamation.
