A new framework, in which the littoral States of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (the Straits) can work together with the international maritime community to enhance navigational safety, security and environmental protection in the Straits, has been formally agreed. Dubbed the ""Co-operative Mechanism"", this far-reaching initiative was cemented at an international meeting hosted by Singapore, convened by IMO and organized in close co operation with the Straits' two other littoral States, Indonesia and Malaysia.
