Dear UN Atlas Member,
In this year's final issue of the UN Atlas of the Oceans newsletter, headlines reveal the great challenges that lie ahead: protecting ships from ever-increasing pirate attacks, preserving our ocean's precious resources for future generations, and managing and using those resources wisely for the millions of people around the world who rely on them for food and livelihoods. As 2008 sees the close of the International Year of the Reef (IYOR), let's look at its far-reaching achievements:A soon-to-be released global overview, Status of Coral Reefs of the World 2008 (available at the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network) Expeditions to find new species, as part of CReefs - the Census of Marine Life (CoML) Sustainable use of coral reefs explained in videos In-depth studies such as A Systematic Appraisal of Hard Corals (family Acroporidae) from the Gulf of Mannar (Indian Ocean) Regional assessments on the status of coral reefs, like Status of Caribbean coral reefs after bleaching and hurricanes in 2005 and the baseline textbook on the Great Barrier Reef The Coral Triangle Initiative Examination of coral ecosystems, for instance, The State of Deep Coral Ecosystems of the United States
