Dear Atlas Member
The 67th United Nations General Assembly recently kicked-off by recognizing the multiple and complex challenges facing the international community - from the effects of climate change to the current economic crisis. Among its many tasks, the Assembly will follow-up on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) which includes dealing with oceans and coastal issues. Many initiatives to support the work ahead are emerging, including the UN Secretary-General's Oceans Compact, aimed at setting out a strategic vision for the UN system to deliver on its ocean-related mandates. This month's newsletter features items on these matters as well as a round-up of interesting news and events.
