As the new year gets underway, the international community is looking at ways to advance sustainable development goals as part of post Rio+20 activities: IMO Secretary-General launched this year's World Maritime Day theme, "Sustainable development: IMO's contribution beyond Rio+20"; national consultations to capture development priorities are taking place; and a survey of sustainability tools and approaches for the oceans over the past 20 years could help pave the way ahead. These and other items covering new publications, new discoveries and new programmes are highlighted in this month's UN Atlas of the Oceans newsletter.
