Dear Atlas Member

Two important groups will be in the spotlight this month: August 9 marks the International Day of the World's Indigenous People where this year's focus is Indigenous peoples building alliances: Honouring treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements. Explore the UN Atlas which contains information on a wide range of treaties and agreements, from the United Nations Law of the Sea to the MARPOL Convention and the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. Special events will be held on the waterfront at New York, USA, featuring the UN Secretary-General and webcast live at webtv.un.org.

International Youth Day on August 12 honours efforts of the world's youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities. This year's theme, Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward, recognizes that youth are one of the most mobile social groups in the context of migration - making up about 30% of international migrants, often travelling by sea as intentional migrants or refugees.

In this month's newsletter you will find a variety of news items from celebrating 30 years of the World Maritime University to exploring the South Pacific islands in a series of documentaries.
