Earlier this month Typhoon Haiyan, thought to be one of the most powerful to ever strike land, devastated the Philippines - affecting an estimated 11 million people, including entire fishing communities. As the international community responds to assist, the Director-General of the World Meteorological Organisationpointed out that, although individual tropical cyclones cannot be directly attributed to climate change, higher sea levels are already making coastal populations more vulnerable to storm surges.
