The December Tsunami's Gender Toll

While the focus today is on the massive earthquake that shook the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra just after midnight, the toll on the communities hit by the tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean on Boxing Day last year is still unfolding. The aid agency Oxfam has found that up to four times more women than men died in the Tsunami. They made the finding after surveying eight villages in the Indonesian province of Aceh, the worst-hit by the devastating waves.
