World Fisheries Conference on Deep Sea Fishing

Events - Conference
16 Sep 2003 - 17 Sep 2003
The progressive expansion of deep-water fisheries has led to new technological needs, raising concerns on how to preserve these resources, which are particularly vulnerable to fishing activities; it has also revealed important gaps in legislation and has brought about the challenge of opening new markets for species that are not familiar to consumers. For the first time, and parallel to VIGO 2003, people from the business world, researchers, legal experts and representatives from international fisheries administrations will meet to discuss their concerns arising from the exploitation of deep-water fisheries. The conference will take place over the two days prior to the exhibitions Grand Opening Ceremony and will be held at the spectacular Museo del Mar which is situated only a short distance from the main exhibition venue. The conference aims to develop ideas for an institutional framework that will ensure sustainability of commercial activities in the deep sea. It will feature leading figures speaking on five main topic areas: The actual situation, Industry, Science, Managing Deep-sea Resources, and Legal and extra-jurisdictional framework. Through these sessions and guided panel discussions, the conference will seek to construct a Declaration of Vigo which will be taken to the Governance Conference in New Zealand in December 2003
