The Marine Environmental Data Information Catalogue (MEDI) is a directory system for marine related datasets and data inventories within the framework of the IODE system. MEDI contains metadata or data about data. The main aim of MEDI is to address the questions: What data do we have? When and where was it collected? Who holds that data? MEDI is a reference point for locating marine and coastal datasets and it forms an ideal vehicle for advertising your data to the scientific community. MEDI is not limited to governmental datasets or is it restricted to freely distributed data. The database structure for MEDI has been based on the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) developed by NASA. Metadata descriptions can be easliy transfered from MEDI to global data directories. In addition, major global data collection programs, such as GOOS, can use MEDI to describe their datasets, with MEDI providing the mechanism to upload metadata to global directories. IODE is developing a new browser-driven version of the MEDI software tool which will be available in early 2002.
