Global distribution of biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction
Marine areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction are home to rich and varied biodiversity. Many ecosystems in these areas, such as seamounts, cold water coral reefs and hydrothermal vents are home to an astonishing diversity of species. While our knowledge of most of these ecosystems is limited, we do know that the biodiversity they support is seriously and increasingly threatened by human activities. A number of recent studies contribute to our understanding of the status and trends of biodiversity in marine areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction, and the threats this biodiversity is under.
